Ammonoids & Nautiloids
A group of extinct cephalopods
that lived in the sea. They usually had a head with a mouth
and lived in a shell that was divided into chambers. In fossils
these chambers are sometimes filled with calcite.
Ammonoid shells are curved or flat coiled
discs, Goniatites with simple zig zags and Ammonites with complex
structures. These can be up to 2 metres.
Nautiloids were more primitive with straight (orthocone) shells
and could be up to 4 metres. |
